Why are rail ministers sitting on a Rs 50,000 cr revenue idea?
Those who still believe that Mamata Didi was right to sack Dinesh Trivedi from the Union railway ministry should rethink! Two railway unions, representing 13.6 lakh employees, have already issued an extraordinary call for a strike in case the government rolls back the hike in passenger fares. Firstpost has now stumbled upon another issue which suggests that politicians in power have been handcuffing the railway ministry from raising funds by other means so as to keep passenger fares down.

14 Ministers, One Ratio And A Train To Nowhere
Poor Dinesh Trivedi. The relatively saner face of Trinamool Congress is facing flak from his boss Mamata Banerjee for daring to take one tiny step towards initiating reforms in user charges. That is, getting consumers to pay for travel. But beyond their sublime incompetence in running a vital infrast ructure and warped incentives that give precedence to political rabble-rousing rather than economic performance, neither the railway minister nor West Bengal's chief minister are relevant to the long-term health of this ailing organisation.

At 4 pm, take the First Metro ride
But, right now, the buzz around the opening the Metro outweighs its lightweight impact. Ashwini, a final year BA student, said: "It takes me at least 30 minutes to get to my college on Langford Road but now I can take the Metro until MG Road, use the feeder bus until Richmond Circle and walk for two minutes to my college. And even all these exercises put together it would only take me about 12-13 minutes." Narendra J M, a senior management supervisor with a private company, said: "The wait is over and I am very excited that I would be using the Metro from Thursday." Advisor to Government of Karnataka for Traffic, Transport and Infrastructure N Sreehari said: "Measuring the performance of the project can only be done only after theen tire phase is complete." The proposal for a comprehensive mass rapid transit transport system (MRTS) lay in cold storage since 1982 till it was approved in 2006. Going back to the 1982 proposal, N Venkata Rao, Advisor, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, (DMRCL), who was also associated with BMRCL, said: "The idea was first mooted when K Jaffer Sharief was the Minister of State for Railways." But successive governments were cold to the project, forcing the proposal in the back burner. It gained some momentum when M Krishnabe came the chief minister. Finally, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation-stone for Namma Metro in its current form on June 24, 2006.
After a good five years, a section of the City's citizens will get to use a section of the project.
A wide cross section of Bangalore's population, including businessmen, corporate executives and students are not complaining as they gear up to meet their time schedules while tarversing the short distance between Baiyapanahalli and MG Road.

New KPCC chief: Sonia to have the last word
State Congress leaders on Wednesday decided to leave the choice of the new Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president to AICC president Mrs Sonia Gandhi. Members of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Wednesday passed an unanimous resolution leaving the choice to Mrs Gandhi. The returning officer(RO) for the PCC elections Mr Gnanadeshikan said a meeting of the KPCC members was customary before the elections.
"And when the meeting passed an unanimous resolution leaving the choice of PCC president to the AICC president, as RO, my only duty is to convey the decision to the party high command," he said. The resolution was moved by former Union minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief and seconded by several senior leaders including leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Mr Siddaramaiah. When pointed out that several PCC units were upset about large scale irregularities in the PCC membership list, he said the term 'large scale' could be the personal opinion of the media.
"As far as I am concerned, the party has done well. It does not mean that there are no irregularities but they will be sorted out," he added. He agreed that there were several lacunae in the selection of PCC members and added that the redressal cell of the party would look into it.
"Every party boasts of internal democracy but no party has procedures in place like the Congress has. "I would say that the elections were successful to the extent of 80 per cent. The success of our recent Padayatra from Bengaluru to Bellary, shows that the internal democratic process will help us do well in future too," he said.
Emphasising that the preparation of the PCC members' list was a "procedure" and not an "exercise," he said the discrepancies and and irregularities would be set right by the time the next polls are due. "Please ignore the irregularities and report only the positive decision made at the meeting," he added.
