Make democracy functional.

STAFF REPORTER

Senior Congress leader and the former Union Railway Minister, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, on Saturday regretted that political parties today are more concerned about the selection of candidates for elections than focussing on the country's development.

Mr. Sharief was speaking at a Seva Dal function to commemorate the 122nd birth anniversary of Bharath Seva Dal founder Narayan Subbarao Hardikar.

He said, “Our democracy allows us to discuss everything, but we wait and expect someone to take action. Political parties are concerned only with the selection and election of candidates.” He suggested that there should be less of debates and more of efficient machinery to make democracy functional.

‘Need unity'

S.N. Subbarao, who presided over the event, said the country's diversity makes it susceptible for the nation to break apart. “We have to work collectively and eliminate our differences on all grounds if we want to keep our country united,” he said.

H. Hanumanthappa, former chairman of the Bharath Seva Dal, said there is an urgent need to come up with solutions to solve the country's woes. Hardikar was a freedom fighter and a social worker. The members garlanded the statue of Hardikar on Kumarakrupa Road and later gathered at the Seva Dal office. A Kannada monthly, Yuva Samskruti, was launched on the occasion.

Condolence messages poured in over the passing away of Sunil Dutt, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare and film star.

Leaders mourn Sunil Dutt

Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: Condolence messages poured in over the passing away of Sunil Dutt, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare and film star.

Mr. Dutt and his actress wife, Nargis, were the favourites of the previous generation of filmgoers, especially patrons of Hindi cinema.

The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, in a message, said Mr. Dutt had carved a niche for himself in the hearts of film lovers.

The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said Mr. Dutt was known for his secular outlook and service to the people.

The Governor of Maharashtra, S.M. Krishna, has said that it is hard to believe that Mr. Dutt is no more. In a message released here, Mr. Krishna said his death is a setback to national integration as he symbolised its spirit. A patriot of the highest order, he had undertaken a peace march to Srinagar in 2002 in an effort to bring peace to the militancy-hit Kashmir Valley.

The Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajashekaran, said that Mr. Dutt's passing away is a big loss to Indian cinema and public life.

The former Railway Minister, C.K. Jaffer Sharief, said that the country has lost a true son of "Mother India" who strove for the unity and integrity of India. He said only a few months ago Mr. Dutt accepted his invitation and inaugurated a national integration youth camp organised by the Bharat Seva Dal and the National Youth Project under the leadership of S.N. Subba Rao.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has said that in the death of Mr. Dutt, the film industry has lost a stalwart and a protector of its interests.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Award for Jaffer Sharief.

Urging party workers to not run after power and “seats”, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief urged them to work with unity to ensure that the party returned to power in the next elections. Speaking after accepting the Indira Gandhi Memorial Award here on Monday, he said that state of affairs in Karnataka was going downhill with the BJP in power. “My advice to the Congress leadership is to not worry about who is going to be the Chief Minister from the party. Work together and create awareness among the people about the ‘murder of democracy’ by the BJP and restore faith in them,” he said. Reminiscing about his association with Indira Gandhi, he said that she strove to empower the disadvantaged sections of society and ensure that there was social justice. “We must follow her ideal. The Congress is synonymous with sacrifice. Both Indira Gandhi and her son Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed themselves, while her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi sacrificed Prime Minister’s position and gave it to Manmohan Singh,” he said.
